    Day 12 - PSAs

    Roosevelt Day 5

This was just a great morning.  I had Childish Gambino’s Camp to take me through the metro and up Georgia Ave, the sun was shining, I was wearing my new jeans, boots, sweater, checked shirt, and puffer (why yes they’re all from J. Crew) because it was cool but not cold, and I was happy.

Today we discussed the contest they’ll be entering.  They’re creating PSAs to encourage kids to go to college as a part of the Double the Numbers program.  Individually, they can win iPads.  As a class, they can win money for their school or the class itself.  Last year the entered twice and won both times, so they’re looking to keep it up.

We did one big example together.  They picked a more specified topic: pregnant high schoolers or parents already.  Then they brainstormed reasons to still go to college (you can still work while going to school, it’ll be good for your child’s future, etc.) and did research to back those claims up.  I’m excited for them, they’ve got some good stuff going.

We also watched that terrifying British texting while driving PSA.  Jane had told me about it but I’d never seen it in full before.  It sends serious chills.  I don’t drive here, but I’m going to be careful when I’m home.  These kids don’t drive either but you could see the effect.  None of them were laughing or making fun.  They felt it.

Mr. Spikes talked to me at the end about getting the correspondents in to talk to the kids, but that they’re coming after school on a Friday.  The class is small enough as it is and I’m worried that no one will show up.  Come on, even dedicated people want to book it out of their on Friday afternoons.
