Day 14 - Bounce Around
Banneker Day 8
There were only about five kids. Mitzy is incredibly dedicated and hardworking. With a little instruction from me she’s picked up InDesign and really made layout her own. I pop up with suggestions and tips when I can, but she’s learning just like I did, through experimenting and doing on her own.
Sylvia, Mrs. Brinkman and I bounced around the whole time. I designed a graphic for a feature, then I popped over to discuss the next issue and a reasonable timeline, then I edited the stories that were in the rough draft of the paper, then I went over edits on an article with the author, then I talked what it’d be like to come back from the break. I said I’m 90% sure I’ll be able to come back. The only thing that could happen is some late Tuesday class or something, but Banneker is my priority. I want to do the full year.
I’d like a bit more organization in the planning stages. I like story outlines and timelines. I find it hard to function without them. But these kids (and Mrs. Brinkman, she puts in so much of her own time) can get things done. I haven’t touched the layout yet and in the two weeks I was gone it not only exists but looks good!
It was a late day, but I didn’t really mind.
